Faithless, the new Black.

Came across this at “Poodles” and “XO” – haven’t checked a close friend of mines blog yet but know he’s an athiest as well…ironically he’s marrying alix and i…..hmmmm…..

Also– I know this questionaire is for Atheists but who are they gonna err..what are they gonna do? Call God on me and condemn me?

The Atheist Thirteen

If you’d like to take part, copy these questions, and answer them in your own words on your own blog.

Q1. How would you define “atheism”?  Lack of faith. A belief system that lacks beliefs, ironic huh?

Q2. Was your upbringing religious? If so, what tradition? Christianity, but not devout or strict or Sundays every week. My parents believe in God. I had moments of not believing in GOD but that was in the 8th grade.

Q3. How would you describe “Intelligent Design”, using only one word?

Interesting.

Q4. What scientific endeavour really excites you?

Making Clones.

Q5. If you could change one thing about the “atheist community”, what would it be and why?

Hrm, doesn’t really matter on changing things. I’m not into the community nor have experience on what the communities goals are.

Q6. If your child came up to you and said “I’m joining the clergy”, what would be your first response?

Good Luck. If my kids want to dedicate their lives to the/a church who am I to say no.

Q7. What’s your favourite theistic argument, and how do you usually refute it?

Arguing with someone on religion or an atheist based on scientific fact mixed with their own passions is pointless, has anyone ever “won” an argument like that?

Q8. What’s your most “controversial” (as far as general attitudes amongst other atheists goes) viewpoint?

I think the idea of being an atheist stems from a flash point in ones lives where God fucked them over or enough times that they lost their faith in a “GOD” or Religion. That, and it’s a fashionable trend to be anti-religion as it makes them “cool” and “alternative” because GOD forbid you have a belief system that the underlying theme is there is something greater than you. Even if it’s science.

Q9. Of the “Four Horsemen” (Dawkins, Dennett, Hitchens and Harris) who is your favourite, and why?

I had to Google this. No clue.

Q10. If you could convince just one theistic person to abandon their beliefs, who would it be?

My poodle.

Editors Note :  My views on religion being a conformist sheep control tool….well I agree that it is/was/are/am. I differ in that I think, and maybe I’m giving humans too much credit but one can decide for themselves what they believe in. I don’t believe in forced religion, I do believe all sides should be taught in school and church, give the options. It’s hard for me to understand those who are faithless how they live from day to day as it would be a lonely life if you think your the only one out there and when you die that’s IT. What do you say when your having an orgasm? Do you scream “OOOHH ME!!!! OOOHHH MEEE!!!!!!”  I think** it’s a mixed bag of both religion and science. I readily admit I don’t have tons of reading experience when it comes to evolution, I.D., the mentioned Horsemen or have read much about atheist in general. Why can’t a GOD have created everything BUT the bible? Is it easier to not have a GOD or Higher Authority so you can’t be held responsible for your actions (down the road)? I HAVE read what Religion has done to the masses in the past especially with my background of Native American. I HAVE knowledge on the hypocrisy of organized religion and see for what is has been and is.  Anyways, thanks for the long read. Now…what do I do about my Atheist Reverend?

  1. Hi

We tried calling god and telling him on you but we got no answer. Seriously though your answers to a questionnaire meant for atheists are interesting.

“Lack of faith. A belief system that lacks beliefs, ironic huh?”

Your definition is wrong. Atheism is a position on whether or not god(s) exists. It’s not system of belief, describe the parts of the system for me. I will say that you might find commonalities amongst people who are atheists. They might be more liberal but then Hitchens is a fairly big exception to this. But there is no dogma, no doctrine to adhere to .

    “Making Clones”

I have an interest here as well. HAve you listened to 7th Son?

“Arguing with someone on religion or an atheist based on scientific fact mixed with their own passions is pointless, has anyone ever “won” an argument like that?”

Your a bit wishy washy and unclear here. Not sure what you are saying. You certainly do not answer the question. There are certain logical arguments presented by Theists that are convincing, though flawed. Which one of these do you like?

Now it sounds to me like you are saying that you see no point to arguing with people who are emotive and blinded by therie own opinions. This is not what the question is about.

“I think the idea of being an atheist stems from a flash point in ones lives where God fucked them over or enough times that they lost their faith in a “GOD” or Religion. Yeah that is a controversial opinion and one that I would say is not based on fact but rather listening to popular opinion on what Atheism is, espoused by people who feel threatened by it, not by examining an information on what Atheists say.

How do account for the fact that there are atheists who have never been religious? Yes Atheism is experiencing somewhat of a popular resurgence, but it is still quite dangerous to be public about it. This is in response to attacks by the Christian Right on secular democracy, education, critical thinking – the very things that allow us to read sci-fi and fantasy or play computer games where you can play magic toting wizards.

All sides of what. That the earth is 4000 years old according to the bible or millions of years according to scientific disciplines? All religions, if you mean comparative religion then yep I agree.

Have you really tried to undersatnd? It’s not a lonely life. I have a wonderful life filled friends and interests. Atheists don’t think they are alone in the world. When you die as far as we know that is it. There is nothing that comes after. That makes this life, this time all the more precious. Your wanting there to be something else is a fantasy, perhaps a nice one, but a fantasy still.

I yell out my wife’s name usually or utter a gutter all groan during orgasm. But seriously do you believe in Thor or Freya because we have days named in honour of them. They way we speak is determined by cultural/societal convention. If you come from a christian background it seems pointless to me to stop cursing or blaspheming just to prove a point.

“Why can’t a GOD have created everything BUT the bible?”
Why does there have to be a good and where is the evidence that he/she/it exists

” Is it easier to not have a GOD or Higher Authority so you can’t be held responsible for your actions (down the road)? ”

Do you live in a society that has laws? We are accountable to society and to those around us. The higher authority usually carries a badge and a gun and is backed by a judicial system.

And I would argue it is much harder to think for yourself than to apply God – the easy answer to everything.

Suggestion think a bit harder on the topic talk to a range of atheists, train yourself in some critical thinking skills.

    Cheers

  2. “Suggestion think a bit harder on the topic talk to a range of atheists, train yourself in some critical thinking skills.”

Will do. The crux of my post was I don’t understand or comprehend atheists views, I’m still learning life as it is and need all the help I can get.
