Captain and Coke and Magic and Fat

Only recently in the past 5 months have I even considered drinking anything of the alcoholic beverage arena beyond beer and wine. My past prime drinking stages basically were from 11th grade in HS into College. Once I married I only drank beer and that was only socially. TO say I had a drinking problem in school would almost be spot on. I only lost one job to it. I showed up 3 hours late for my gig as a waiter for Mother’s Day at Holiday Inn (Omaha). They fired me on the spot. Mother’s day..I guess is a busy day.

My tolerance for drinking was at it’s peak in College. Now…not so much. I can drink a lot if it’s spread out a lot. i.e. 3 beers an hour vs. 3 beers 1/2 hour but then my bladder has apparently shrunk over the years and can really only hold 8 ounces before I HAVE TO PEE. It’s sad really.

This past December I was on my annual work trip to Atlantic City and one of our Account Reps ordered a Captain and Coke. He’s a drinker by trade (sales) and he normally is very reserved but he took a sip and said ‘Ahhhh.’  Intrigued I ordered one over my Blue Moon. It was delish. It was booth smooth and sweet. Not over powering and the balance was topped off by the glass it held it in. I ordered 3 more. Luckily our eatery was on the PIERS which is connected to Caesars Palace which was my Hotel and only had to stumble along with fellow co workers to get to my room. The morning came and having to work our booth I had a very good surprise. No hangover remnants. Nothing.

The history of Rum and Coke or Pepsi in my Marital life is one of interest. My first wife – all she drank and only drunk was Rum and Coke, Jack and Coke. THat makes for an expensive night out. I could afford it back then because when we dated we had zero kids and lived at home…well..I did…her parents kicked her out. My lovely wife of today ALSO only really drinks Jack/Rum and Pepsi – she likes wine but not so much as she does a good RnC.

There’s something very calming about the drink. Readily admitting I’m a noob at drinking – I think I will enjoy this journey into drinking again. Thank you Wife.

This will be my 5th week coming up in a friggin row where I’m playing Magic the Gathering in an official capacity. That being, reporting to WOTC/Hasbro. I’ve played 3 weeks of FNM – Friday Night Magic where I went 3-1, 3-1 n 3-1 with my ‘white weenie’ deck full of wonderful 1-2 drops. Like most of my addictions I always come back to them eventually. Also picked up a Mox Ruby from trading away some playable cards and feel he may have gotten the better deal but…w/e. I have a Mox now.. This weekend was National Gaming Weekend and most game stores had events going on for the weekend and I participated in a the Standard tournament – meant to be the Grand Prix Trial for Indy but not enough peeps signed up. I used the same WW deck but tweaked with with black and green for Spirits and Parallel View to double my love of tokens. I went 2-1-1 and made top 8 but lost to mana screw both games 0-2. It was a fun night too as my wife and I sipped Captain and Cokes while downing fried foods at the local sports bar.

Today is my 3rd venture into Juice Cleansing. i.e. only drinking liquids in the way of vegetable and fruit juices* *I allow myself Coffee with non-dairy.
First round was 28 pounds lost gaining back 8 (30 days). 2nd round was 10 lost gaining back 5. (10 days)  One will always gain back due to what your doing which is NOTHING is in your belly. So I’m trying to get a cushion of able weight I gain back.  i.e Lose 30 gain 10 = net 20 loss. I always feel so much better doing these things, everything is much better. Everything.  Mind, body, confidence, focus, saves me a TON of eat out food. Typically I spend 6-9 dollars for lunch and same for dinner. =)  It’s not luck to do this it’s complete and utter will power. Mind over Fat Matter.

Being without

Sketch by Wook.

A short while ago my PC went Poop. I’m very anal retentive about “My Stuff” which encompasses : My electronics, tools, car, collectibles & stuff. That also means no one is allowed to use/play/touch any of the things listed above without explicit permission. Mainly, my computer. This particular one is just over 18 months old. I bought it off Woot.com at the suggestion of John Guzman (former coworker and ex-friend (haha). He was literally shocked at the time anyone would listen to his advice on a purchase like this. It was a really good deal and still is. It’s a med range gaming rig as far as one could be with a model off the shelf – this one being from Gateway.  Don’t laugh…this fucker is the bomb.

I believe it’s one of three things gone wrong or a combo. My gut feeling is it’s a bad HD followed by a very bad virus (I have 3 up-to-date virus/malware/internet security programs that tend to catch most everything) or bad memory stick. We shall see. Having local company pick it up and do it’s diagnosis (free).

In this time of being without a regular PC (I have a laptop but …. it’s a lap top) – I haven’t logged into WoW, played SC2, played SWG, played LOTRO or done freelance work (just had a request yesterday…). Instead my time in the evening has been more interactive with my wife. Playing my PS3 or Wii. Reading. Sketching. It’s like having no electricity…you find other more tangible things to do. Things you used to do 10 years ago. More productive would be a good word to describe the past 2 weeks.

I’ve also been recovering from a bad flu I had which started on Christmas Eve. I coughed and sneezed so much it triggered my umbilical hernia to get all pissed off at me. If my devoted readers read last year, I lost 20 lbs in about 4 weeks..which resulted in my stomach having issues – basically the muscle on the outer wall was weak from years of stretching (getting fatter) and when it had less pressure my intestines were ‘free’ so to speak. Soooo….one week ago today, I sneezed and felt a ‘push’ from within my belly area. It hurt. It hurt to sit upright. I went to my Doc and he poked and shifted my belly contents around and determined that I’d have to have surgery if it ever has anymore sharp pains. That’s not a good surgery. Period. His answer (besides surgery) is to simply lose the weight.
So here I am again back on the boat of watching what I eat. Been here before. Tired of it. I beat smoking. I beat my 2 week addiction to pain pills from my ankle surgery. I beat Defender. I’ve played Galaga for 2 hours straight. Why can’t I break the eating thing?

Moral of my blog post is to try new things. Disconnect for a week. Or a day. Do something other than sitting in front of a screen. Go fuck your wife or girlfriend.  She’ll appreciate your undivided attention.

StarCraft II Initial Thoughts

Like much of Blizzard’s games they took their sweet time producing it. I pre-ordered the Collectors Edition and it was on my door step yesterday. Why the C.E.? Why not!?  It includes

  • Soundtrack
  • Raynors Dog Tags with pre-installed SC and SC Broodwar Flash Drive
  • Behind the scenes DVD
  • WoW THOR ingame pet – which looks awesome and is very active in it’s animations
  • 2 Guest Passes for SC2 and WoW
  • Art of SC2 Bound Book
  • The game
  • #0 Comic Book, bagged and boarded
  • Ingame special tags and avatars

Total price with taxes and shipping : $115.00   I do consider it worth it? Yes! Unlike other gaming companies Blizzard aims to impress and please as well as keep customer loyalty their focus. I know I sound like a homer but this is based on experience with the company going on for 12 years now. The ONLY thing I can complain about is their Phone Customer Support lines– being too full.

It took me 100 phone calls and hours of waiting for me to get someone LIVE on the phone about my Authenticator on my iPhone going KABLOOWEY. Then it took a total of 11 days to be back online. Wait, there’s more. Last week my acct also go hacked. I decided to not get the Authenticator once it was removed from the first round……..sure enough days later my acct was compromised. My computer at home is Ft. Knox and I don’t visit ‘bad’ websites. *shrug*.  However, once I submitted my ticket – knowing full well the kinda backlog they must have – I thought another 2 weeks. Nope. Less than one week I got everything back– the hacker pretty much only hit my Alt Guild Bank — leaving my other toons alone. They refunded everything, gear, mats, gold and all with solid communication.

Ok– back to SC2.

I played the BETA for 3 weeks straight and the nuances of the games core was intact. I was afraid they’d change a bunch of shit. They didn’t. The didn’t mess with the original formula but rather gave you more to strat on. Units and planning your attack/defense. The BETA – as BETA’s do changed every other day with tweaks here and there. Void Ray’s in particular were devastating mainly due to their over powered ‘range’ attacks. They nerfed it in BETA.

It took maybe 15 mins to load the software with subsequent patches (yes already had patches). BOOM I was online and started the Raynor quest line and reeled in some achievements. They have a robust achievement system in the game and don’t look to complete them all in the first week. There are a ton.

They also have an ‘Armory’ where you can buy upgrades to your units, customized– you get credits when you complete the story line quests. Sound familiar?  I started with Marine and Bunker upgrades. I’m a firm believer in Defense in gaming, especially this one.

I was able to complete the initial line of quests easily in ‘Normal’ mode and it took maybe over an hour for those 3. One is timed so you can’t rush through it.

I then took a deep breathe and signed up for some 1:1 PvP action in the beginners league. I was matched up with another Terran player and while I was a nuisance my spending of credits lacked thought and 20 mins in I typed “GG” as I waisted my creds and TIME on too many Marines without upgrades.

I then let my wife play some PvP vs. AI and she chose her beloved Protoss. She also chose ‘Medium’ for the level of difficult level. This equates to 5 mins of build time at that level. She was over run rather quickly, even for a seasoned vet player. She had fun losing though.

Overall the game’s interface, storyline quest mode with interactive hot spots were an interesting way to present the storyline. The voice overs can make or break a game and these are very good. Game play still feels like SC1 but the new units and combos one can amass for attacks are unique. Playability in the long term is tried and true– I didn’t want to stop playing. I think the ladder system and ranking will also enhance the games longevity and competition– provided Blizzard keeps a watchful eye on ingame hacking and exploits. One of the oldest exploit was if you were losing a pvp game you could simply quit the game and not get the loss counted…..not that I’ve ever done that….

If your out an about this week and have 40-60.00 for the game or $100.00 for the C.E. I highly recommend this game– I’d offer my guest passes but those are going to my Mother-in-Law. =)

My Gamer Wife and Internet Cheating

The wife of a gamer is one that is … wait… lemme rephrase this. IF you game and have a significant other specifically a wife then you lead a very interesting life. I have been blessed with such a wife that gives me zero shit when I play. She doesn’t roll her eyes, give the ‘sigh’ deal, complains to me or others (far as I know and I trust her implicitly).

I’ve met all types of couples both married, engaged, bf/gf, living together etc. I’m a rare case. I appreciate the fact that I can play for 4-5 hours at a time, she brings me drinks, dinner/lunch, rubs my shoulders, kisses my neck and basically pampers me even when I’m dodging mind flays in Warsong Gulch. She congrats me on all my achievements, dings, goals in game as I verbally will yell out such happenings. I am spoiled but not the kind of spoiling where I don’t appreciate it or take it for granted. I love that she’s the way she is and isn’t.

We used to play together; WoW, SWG, SC etc. Her attention span on repetitive gaming like MMO’s – where there is a no-end game is slight at best. She got her Lock to level 40 something before she was deathly bored of mashing the keyboard. She played SWG until Sony Fucked it up with the CU (Combat Upgrade) debacle. She was awesome in SWG, we’d spend hours hunting, leveling, questing everything star wars. It was a golden age.

She blogs now. She literally has no time to game with her career on full tilt. I know when StarCraft 2 comes out she will find some time to play once more and build 8793 Protoss Cannons. She takes beautiful pictures on her outings with her residences. I recently showed her the basics of ‘free hosted’ blogging and she now rarely asks for help. Her attentions from online meanderings are much like mine with my interests waxing and waning but she’s fantastic at writing and communicating her views. The company blog she runs is 100% Alo.

You can check her blog HERE. It features events, outings, and things-going-on at her workplace. She’s the person who facilitates the day to day workings of Assisted Living.

I knew a couple from a few years ago where the husband would play a couple hours a night and more on the weekends. His wife whom he met via an online dating site was very nice and tolerated his time online. They’re still married after 5 years now, but he recently had to give it up to focus more on her. She, apparently started to game in another game – he was on WoW, she was on EQ2. They both were in popular guilds and soon sat by side when they gamed, I’d over hear her in Vent talking about drama in her guild/game–. His wife was in-between jobs when she started playing EQ2 more and more with so much time to herself that HE saw an issue happening before his very eyes. It’s not JUST men that can get addicted to gaming.

He sent me an ingame email for fear his wife could read his ‘normal’ email and it basically said he’s caught his wife ‘cheating’ with another guy from her guild in EQ2. He wanted advice and asked me if i’ve ever come across sit’s like this. I have. However, there is a lot of gray area when it  comes to ‘cheating’ online. Is ‘flirting’ cheating? Is /kiss /hug /bmoc /lick forms of actual vow cheating? These were the questions I had to clarify before I could offer any advice on his next careful steps.

My humble opinion is any conversations in email, vent, face to face, letters where there is intent of being romantically involved or straight up ‘lets meet and fuck’ themes IS cheating. I believe if there is will there is intent and therefore is cheating. Compliments, emotes like above aren’t in their most basic context unless it’s reciprocated with intent. If it’s playful banter and its PUBLIC knowledge, like say in guild chat/vent then to me that’s fine. I flirt ingame. Not so much anymore since most of my friends are now in other guilds…lol. ❤ Sokym!

I knew of one married guy just last year who took flirtations to new levels. He’d act innocent when I’d call him on it but these guildy ladies ‘followed’ him around like little puppies. It was an ingame -inside joke amongst the core guildies, when they’d start flirting with him and his wife was totally oblivious to it. Come to find out they kinda have an ‘open’ relationship since she has male visitors come by every few months to stay a few days at their home, the guy having never met these ‘men‘. Since it’s ‘open’ my views on his marriage are out the door since to each his/her own on their time. It was rather funny though hearing how his wife is galavanting around town while this guys at work – working for the City Government busting his ass. Social work in Government with @sshole bosses and 21 supervisors sucks eggs. I’m pretty cock sure about my relationship but there’s no way in hell I’d have some stranger my wife met online – even if she knew him before me – go spend time with her when I’m not there. See, there’s the ‘gray’ area of where one draws the line. To me, that one is obvious. I believe that’s called ‘cuckold‘. Sure, I trust my wife but I don’t trust strangers WITH my wife.

So back to the cheating EQ2 wife. He tells me they have exchanged their email address, talk on Yahoo chat and in Vent. He’s not sure about the cell phone since she pays the bills. (lol) He’s not sure what they talk about but he’s upset. I tell him to spend more time with her. Go do things together. Log off. There’s something wrong with their marriage if this has gotten to this stage and my only side of the story is HIS. Divorce sucks and if it can be avoided then work on it.  He confronts her a few days later after our talk and she admits the transgression. She tells him that the online guy simply paid more attention to her and listened to her. She needs and wants attention. So, they both decided to quit gaming for awhile (they still don’t play). He re-focused his priorities and my last convo was they’re much happier now. She apparently told the online guy thanks for your support but she loves her husband (awww).

I’ve also witnessed many cyber relationships actually work out. Mostly for long distance hook ups. Whatever floats your boat and gets you off.

I met my wife online too, not gaming though, a local dating site that got bought out a few years back. I think it’s pretty effin cool when you meet another online since your initial impressions are usually what they ‘write’ vs. how they look. I would read her forum postings, her articulate ways about her prose. Her short verse, long verse, her spelling. I became literally (pun) enchanted with her. Then the bonus part being she’s hot. Super Bonus she gamed. Big Wamo Bonus she loves me for me!

Bar, social gathering happen-stance dating seems archaic now.

Anywho– long post, but wanted to share.

h e a l t h

When I get the chances to make a ‘wish’ from birthdays, fortune cookies, shooting stars, when the clock reads 1:11 or 11:11 and/or when there’s an eye lash needing to be wished upon I usually make the same wish. That wish is for my family and friends to live healthy lives & be healthy.

Your welcome.

Last week my wife & started feeling little itches in our throats and knew something was coming. What was to come was 4 days of misery in the form of some med grade flu bug. Usual symptoms which include sore body aches, nasal pressure & congestion and sever sore throat. This one was odd since I didn’t have so much a cough as much as a barrage of sinus headaches and my throat burned. It sucked ass.

In my moments of clarity I did some work for work. Slept a lot. Ate little since it was a chore and pain to eat anything non-liquid. (eww). I was able to play some MMO’s while I was clear enough – my time in WoW has slowed to a crawl mostly due to being sick and the other reason being I’m bored with it. This would be the ‘wane’ time of WoW for me. The ‘wax’ time is currently SWG again. I upped a couple accounts and having fun doing NEW stuff ingame. The whole ‘Chronicles’ thing is of course a super in-depth quest reward system that harkons back to pre-CU. (Combat Upgrade).

I made my new city named “WookieLuv” back on Lok, established several citizens to be ranked up to level 2 city this week. Threw down a bunch of harvesters- as my foray back into the game will be selling resources as I’m too far behind the proverbial ball on crafting anything interesting or worth selling. I have all the profession covered so there’s no lack of interest or need to collaborate with other crafters unless I simply don’t have the materials.

I was able to recall my ‘Musashii’ account and opened up the TCG packs they give you for free and VOILA I got the Rebel ‘Spire’ building. That’s worth around $200-$250.00. I got for free. I was also able to fanagle a deal on a “Hangar” which is worth $300.00 and able to sell the card for $275.00 – which will help pay for the subs and more. =D When I left the game in 07 I had 1.5 billion credits. I wasn’t about to throw it away at that time and am very glad I kept the credits. Apparently the game is having a nice ‘comeback’. Those credits are now worth nearly a 1:1 ration of millions to dollars. i.e. 100 million credits = $100.00  of which you can easily sell via paypal, ingame or other 3rd party places.

Who knew.

Anyways, I’m enjoying my SWG time and hopefully will continue doing so. WoW is still interesting, just less. I was able to get WookieLuv 5/6 Windrunner Hunter Set this weekend. Not bad for being a janky ass hunter.

A lot can be said about having ‘time’ and with WoW and it’s current state of being easy enough anyone can pick it up and gear up in a week-to-two-weeks time and be respectable.* I’ve written a few posts on the dumb-downing of WoW and while it still rings true today I’m hoping the next expansion adds new elements and features worth logging in for.

7.5 Hours of Naxx 25 & Healing Tips.

This was my Sunday incarnate. Started at Noon Sunday and finished it at 7:30 P.M. I had the opportunity to upgrade my T7 Helm to T7.5 but lost the roll. I did win some very nice ‘Boots’. We cleared it to the end and I was able to garner a load of achievement points in the process. I was invited by ‘Bal’ the guild leader of “Order of the Templar” and they have a tentative agreement with the guild ‘TDK’ which stands for “Too Damn Kewl” or whatever you want it to mean….mmmk.

They had cleared the Arachnid and Construct Wing the night before but couldn’t get Thaddiusdown..while Thad is a bitch for newbies to the fight, once you die a couple times you def. get the hang of the fight. It’s all about positive and negative movement and READING your screen. For some, reading is asking too much.

I was the lone “Pug” which could be a good thing or bad thing, meaning I better not fuck up. I didn’t…cept the first go on Mind Controlling the NPC on Instructor Rav   We wipe but got him down 2nd shot. Click the link for explanation of fight– Priests are used (2-3) to MC the 4 Elites guarding him. The idea is to MC the front 2 while everyone is on the boss and the tanks on the other 2. Timing is essential as the MC timer is only good for so long and may break. Use the MC’d ‘bone armor’ THEN taunt the boss, using vent you need to tell the other priest when you do these so you can trade off the taunts and bone armor cool down. You also have to count on the other healers to be healing YOU the priest as there are some AOE’s happening from time to time, once you see the MC running out ANNOUNCE it. ** before I go on, almost forgot– set your ‘FOCUS’ on your MC target, although the boss is in a shiney blue armor set he does get lost among 25 other people, the focus will let you ONLY target that…target.** ok, so you announce the MC is about to run out, I usually bubble then immediately go back to MC, the bubble is incase I miss as the NPC’s hit…hard. Once you get a 2nd MC he should be down quick. Announce you are onto your 2nd MC target. **also note have the Leader MARK these guards and assign the appropriate marks**. Once you get your 2nd mark rinse and repeat and announce all of your actions in vent, only you and the other priests OR tanks should be talking. Other than that…he’s easy. More on Boss fights as time permits. Thanks for the long read.
