New Tings.

My wife started Drum class this past winter and loved it. I bought her one for Christmas but after the first drum circle (via Meetup.com) I realized I got a ‘small’ one and wasn’t really what one uses for drumming. Being a Native American- the drums I’ve seen, been around are the very very large ones where one beats in unison of has a particular ‘part’.

Our first drum circle and other ones she attended I simply watched or didn’t go. As the changes in my physical weight changed so has my attitude about trying new things and making it a conscience decision to do so – weekly. The ability for me to not just ‘SAY’ I will do something but to actually ‘DO IT’ leads to more opportunity for me (at least) and I get to see the world in a more wider vision. Wow..I sound like a hippie. I plan on purchasing a used one or maybe a new one depending on cost – and sit along side my wife and drum away. Once I get my feet wet my leading goal is to see about getting in locally with another tribe and drum for them. There are some tribes that allow inter-tribal drummers but it’s certainly not common.

My biking adventure is also started – I’m training myself at the gym via spinning/cycling stationary as our last bike pretty much fell apart and we returned it with a bad taste in our mouth and I felt like I really failed by not doing my own homework. This is an excuse and perhaps it’s true – but I can’t really take impact sports very well. My body reacts kinda weirdly lately. Impact like running, jogging. I can do it but the results after are not worth it – cramping, pulls, etc. However, I will hit the treadmill and give it a go considering the last 5k I ran I weighed an extra 35 pounds. I’m focusing on non-impact exercising – cycling and swimming. Less stress on my fragile body.

All these new endeavors should be fun and entertaining. A body in motion as they say…

Food Inc.

I recently watched two documentaries on my streaming Netflix via my iPhone. – btw thanks for doing that Apple & Netflix…being able to watch movies on the fly will make my traveling and wait time that much more enjoyable! KUDOS!

I watched ‘Food, Inc.’  and ‘College, Inc.’  One was about the food industry and how American basically is beholden to a handful of Corporation for our food consumption. Our foods that are basically ‘shells’ of actual foods we used to produce normally, not like an assembly line. It also highlighted farmers – the traditional ones pretty much are non-exsistant due to large corporations using all types of methods to gain control over their market. One such company “Monsanto” owns 90%+ of the Soybean market due to the fact that they modified the soybean to be resistant to diseases natural and un-natural. It used to be farmers had their OWN seed, now since Monsanto owns the patent on the seed the farmers now own nothing. Any farmers caught saving seed are prosecuted and bullied. You need to watch this documentary. It’s eye opening.

The other topics the movie touched on was the healthiness of it’s food, safety standards – think the recent recalls of beef, eggs, greens…all based off these 5-6 companies disregard for common sense. Proper feeding techniques, housing, storing and the use of chemicals is amazing it’s allowed. They also dig into the D.C. political connections where they ladder of power of these corps go right into the White House, regardless of whose President. It’s always about Money. Always.

I’m certainly not a champion of change (see Obama) and I won’t be protesting with signs outside Big Business as I believe Capitalism with Conscience is what should be happening. Currently, our – god..I hate sounding negative — currently our Government systems and Big Business are one and the same. Us middle class people have next to no power or voice. Our Government is supposed to protect us from harm, illegal motives and listen to us. I think it’s too late for any change until something drastic happens in the form of a National or Worldwide * if it is Worldwide it HAS TO INCLUDE AMERICA otherwise we won’t care…* crisis like disease, global disasters, etc. Only then do the pragmatic minds come together.

Since the movie, I’ve changed my eating habits. inorite? While we already frequented the local growers and Farmer Market I plan to get MORE and ask questions about their food. We were already talking about getting 1/2 a cow…yes a cow…these are the kind that are raised on a local farm, local grower who graze the natural grass on their farms. Not corn fed, grain fed but grass fed Beef. No chemicals or enhancers. They will let you come to their farm and tour it. You can see first hand what you’ll be eating. Sounds a little weird yes, but I think it’s a much better choice than what’s in your local Wal-Mart, Hen House or grocer.

The biggest obstacle for us is price. It’s no surprise that fast food and theme eateries  (Chili’s, Red Lobster, Red Robin) are less expensive to eat than a home cooked meal. When I can get a double cheeseburger, fry and a Ice Tea or $3.00 in less than 2 mins. my mind and bucks tend to go that route. You have to work for healthy foods. Pay 50% more on produce and meats. That certainly adds up. We did the ZONE diet last year and within 2 months we lost a combined 30 lbs but were broke. The ZONE diet is basically like any other diet except that you eat more Vegetables and Fruits. You can still eat meat, sugars but the proportions are almost 3:1 against.

One of the MOST interesting facts they showed– the relation to how healthy someone was, was in direct relation to how much money they made. The more money you made the healthier you were (since you can afford the Healthier foods), the poorer you were the less healthy and obese you were. That goes hand in hand with your personal health down the road. Diabetes, Heart Disease, Obesity – if your poor and not white your odds of being sick and unhealthy were almost 75% higher than Middle- Upper Class people. Makes sense.  I’ve never seen a WHOLE FOODS on Troost. I see Popeyes, Churches Chicken, Liquor Stores, Donuts, Fast Food, Check Cashing and Pawn Shops.    Go out to where I live – aka per Tony of Kansas City – “Golden Ghetto” and we have 3 Whole Foods grocers, Hen House has entire sections dedicated to Organics, yes we have Popeyes  and Liquor stores and a few check cashing places but we also have Farmers markets (4) not including the one at the City Market. Tons of Health Clubs. Community Centers. Parks and Parks for Dogs…..

I’m getting off on a tangent. I do that.

My point of this blog post is to take an hour and half and watch the movie. Go to a Salad Bar vs. Red Robin (Yummmm). btw I fuckin LOVE BURGERS and FRIES…. and I’m certainly not pontificating that I’m going to change every eating habit overnight. I love chocolate. I love Pasta! I love Chick-Fil-A!  I WILL shop locally for produce and support local farmers.

Spring!

Ahh the semi-warm breezes, the non-freezing my ass off when I take my son to school an hour early so he can learn algebra and not fail time is upon me/us. For the hordes of followers of this blog I give you my health update.Pierre-Auguste Cot (Pierre Auguste Cot)

I’m still losing it. And not. I’m exercising more, more trips to the gym, why last week alone was 3 visits which included a ‘walk’. This week has been a jaunt to our local stores where normally we’d hop in the car and go– we walk to Price Chopper, Blockbuster and Wal-Mart. The weather has been fantastic in Overland Park lately *knock on wood* so I’m more outside. Sorta. lol

I’m hovering around 235 but my legs are more tone, chest and arms too– I do 50 pushups a day, 3 flights UP at work stairs and am still eating healthy but it seems my rapid loss is now grinding. I chalk it up to late night eating and weird  cravings for chocolate. >.>

As science says, muscle weighs more than fat so I think I need to do more cardio. The treadmill I tend to run 1.5 or so– more jogging then ever thanks to this gradual buildup of stamina. I’m not all 5k and marathons like my friend Sam is but I’m better and have more energy. My back, which is among the top reasons for weight loss is stronger than ever with my focused training when on the machines at the gym- averaging 4 reps of 20- 3 machines designed for lower back. My true test comes in a month or so when I travel to D.C. for business where I tend to get back spasms at the end of the set up of our booth.  I hire workers but it’s hard for me to NOT help.

My gaming time in WoW is curbtailed to maybe 3-4 times a week at maybe 2 hours max. I don’t see the point of essentially playing a console game built for kids with the same content. I love WoW but at this point it’s just  boring. Ohh..a badge. Ooohh we cleared ICC. yay. Give me new things to DO, new profs, new things to see and explore. 5 years of WoW is a long time MMO-wise. I laugh when I see people posting about how far their alliance or horde guild has progressed in today’s set up. Where’s the challenge? The struggle? The goals for achievement that means something? When someone can go from a gear score rating of 2k to over 5k in a week….well…that says alot about the state of the game. Hell, WOokieluv got all the tier non-special Hunter set in 2 weeks and that was part time. My poodle could do that.

In the end it’s all relative. I’m sure it’s hella fun for some.

I’m sure once the expansion comes out I’ll be playing 15-20 hrs a week again. Til then I’ll log in, try a raid, do my cd’s, say hi to my boys and girls….just needs something NEW to the game.

Star Wars Galaxies is ramping up for me. My city went down one level because I forgot to claim a residence when I moved the cantina. lol  I’m making slow credits til I find my niche. Working on Droid Engineering sub components and selling resources/loot. Making several signatures for players at 5 million ea. Got several long term trades going. Fun for now….

I say now because I’m still focused on losing weight. I love feeling more alive. Seeing both sides of the gaming coin– people who game tend to be fat. I am one. Sitting in front of the computer at work for 6-7 hours then gaming from 6-mid night isn’t something your body needs. It needs to MOVE. Not just to the fridge but OUT the door, MOVING. Life’s way to short to sit there like a zombie mashing buttons. The flip side being I KNOW how it feels to LOVE to SIT there with your ‘online’ friends and simply being taken away to another world. Escaping one’s own life for another less stressful. I get that. I just think gamers need to balance it out. Social, physical and mental balance is the goal of most people I think. It certainly is mine.

I’m taking personal responsibility for my health, especially since Obama fucked us over with the healthcare. LOL. Not really, I’m doing it for me and my family. In the mean time it’s also given me time spent with my kids. I include them on walks and jogging. I take my son with me to the gym since he decided to not do track this year. He runs around the upper deck track while I lift. Brings us closer and gives us face time. I’m truly blessed on having a family, son and daughter.

I know the time is fast approaching where my kids will be out the door and on their own (so to speak) and spending time with them — ANYTIME is something to be treasured. It all sounds cliche but time is flying by fast and I don’t ever want to regret NOT spending time with them. I’m anti- “Cat In The Cradle” . =D

This long ass post which went in 5 directions was brought to you by Dunkin Donuts and the letter “F” for FAT. Thanks for reading.
